XI Justice
The judge in the Justice card sits on a throne with the scales of justice in one hand, a sword symbolizing rational thought in the other. This card can represent legal matters, but it also reflects the metaphors of the legal system. At different times in our lives we may take on the role of an advocate, judge, or mediator. We must sometimes justify our actions or make a case for what we want. Generally, the Justice card encourages us to be well informed before making a decision, and to consider the consequences of our actions.
Eight of Cups
Having left behind eight neatly-stacked chalices, a figure is crossing a body of water, headed for the higher ground of another shore. The Eight of Cups can represent putting the past behind us, or determining the feeling that it is time to move on—to leave what we have outgrown and set out on a new course.
Nine of Pentacles
A woman stands in her vineyard, a falcon perched on her hand. The Nine of Pentacles represents an appreciation of what we have—enjoying the fruits of our labor. It is also symbolic of the gift or reward of leisure time, slowing down—notice the snail in the foreground—of being able to relax, and to find solitude and connect with nature.
Knight of Swords
The Knight of Swords charges on his horse, slashing his sword through the stormy air, looking as though he is leading an attack. This card represents a person who fiercely defends his or her ideas and points of view, as well as someone who thinks fast and is a straight talker.
XVI The Tower
The Tower represents an event or a situation that shakes us up and forces us to take action or reexamine our beliefs. The circumstances that ignite The Tower may be unforeseen and beyond our control, but the card also warns us that being immobile or passive for too long will inevitably force a situation to a crisis point. In either case, The Tower can be an epiphany, a bolt of inspiration, or a catalyst for needed change.
Eight of Wands
The eight wands in this card appear to be flying through the air towards their targets. The card symbolizes swift action—making quick decisions, a fast move, becoming instant friends, or jumping into a relationship. It also stands for communication—sending and receiving letters and messages, getting in touch, saying what we need to say and making sure our communication is well aimed.
