The Star! The colours are soooo pretty: the pink-blue sky, the repeating blue in the landscape and the water and the way the pale star maidens stand out against the rest of the card. I thought they might be the pleiades, but there’s 8 of them (representing the 8-pointed star usually found in the RWS?) I’d love to know the story behind the girls in the bubble
It looks like they’re sight-seeing, like they’re on a tour. Given that this is the Bosch tarot, they’re probably on a tour of hell, which is why they need their firmament dome to protect them. There’s a wonderful sense of camaraderie between the maidens in the way the are interacting. The one in front looks like she is pointing out something particularly fascinating to her friend. I also like the one in the back who’s hunched down a bit – their body language communicates their innocence and wonder.
I also have to think that the message of hope is portrayed very well by the presence of the pristine beauty of the “stars” in Bosch’s landscape. They are untouched, unsullied, even though they are “slumming it”, far away from the heavens. This card says to me that, no matter what “environment” you find yourself in, however far from “home” you are, if you can maintain your sense of wonder and innocence, you will always be surrounded and protected by beauty.
